“高级英语”是为有一定英语基础的英语专业学习者及英语爱好者量身打造的一门进阶式英语语言课程。本课程在基础阶段语言学习的基础上，整合零散的语言知识点，在语言学理论、语言教学理论和社会文化理论的基础上重新审视语言的用法和特点，进一步完善语言知识结构，为高年级专业理论课程学习的平稳过渡，打下良好的基础，同时也为应对研究生入学考试、TOEFL、GRE和雅思等语言水平考试提供必要语言知识和专业知识储备。
本课程选取英美国家具有影响力的作家和作品，涉及不同体裁类型，包括记叙文、描写文、说明文、议论文以及这些体裁的混合使用，围绕当今社会关注的热点问题，如自然灾害、核武器、人性善恶、美与丑、宗教与科学、气候、战争及作家的历史书写，对不同类型的体裁和话题文本的语言特色及修辞特点进行系统的介绍和讨论，形成以话题和体裁为语境，融合词汇与修辞、语法与语用的语境教学新体系。
本课程以张汉熙主编、王立礼编著的《高级英语》（第三版重排版）为教材，《高级英语》第一册为对象，以体裁和话题为线索，选取其中具有代表性的作品为学习案例，对作品的文本信息（作家与作品的背景信息、文体信息与主题思想、作品的基调与情感态度）进行知识结构拆分，形成一个个彼此独立而又有内在逻辑联系的知识点，将分散的语言知识和相关理论知识有机融合，形成基于修辞的文本理解大语境，进而观察词汇、语法和语用的实现手段和实现途径。
本课程的特色有以下几个方面：第一，案例教学法。本课程并没有将教材的所有课文都纳入教学内容，而是选取其中有代表性的课文作为经典案例，有利于学习者举一反三，掌握同类体裁和话题学习所必须的方法和技巧。第二，演绎-归纳型教学法。本课程采取自上而下演绎法，从理论和概念出发，将文本信息碎片化为具体的知识点，又采用自下而上的归纳法，观察概念信息的语言（词汇、语法和语用）实现路径，从而做到既关注知识点的概念理解，又关注概念在文本中的应用。第三，多模态互动法。本课程不仅提供了知识点视频讲解，还提供了知识点PPT，通过各种外部链接、富文本信息，及相关练习、测试及互动讨论栏目，将相关语言知识和概念知识与知识的延伸与扩展结合起来，形成了以“基于文本又超越文本”语言学习生态，不仅为语言应用能力的提高提供了可视化实训平台，也为学习者自主学习能力和个性化发展提供可借鉴、可复制的操作方案。
