    This section contains a detailed analysis of the text, specifically, how the text is structured, how the writer uses contrast to prove her point, and how to locate and understand key information in the text.

  • 2.4Usage

    This section focuses on language points, including important words, phrases and sentence patterns and some drills.

  • 2.5Sentence Patterns

    This section focuses on how to find keywords. It includes how to categorize keywords, and how to spot keywords quickly in an article as well as key information.

  • 2.6Reading Skills

    This section contains how to categorize emails, what the format of an email is, how different kinds of language is used in different types of emails, and how to reply to an email from your parents.

    In this unit, we are going to learn a text titled “What’s the world to do about water?” In this text, the author, will give us a detailed account of water problems. Then we are going to have 2 readings: Reading 1 continues our look at the problem of water scarcity, outlining its effects on health, hunger, education and poverty. Reading 2 describes China’s water situation and concludes that China needs a sustainable, long-term solution to its water problem.

    We are going to have a clear picture of the unit from the introduction to its meaning and its structure.

  • 3.2Pre-reading

    key facts we should know about water are offered here so that we can have a clear picture before we have further understanding of the text. A video clip about fresh water servers as an opener to arouse our attention to water problems.

  • 3.3Text Reading

    In this part, we are going through some key words and expressions from the text which are useful for the text comprehension and our future use. And we will paraphrase some difficult sentences from the text. We should read between lines so that we can have a better understanding of the text.

  • 3.4Usage

    Similar words are difficult to distinguish and confusing to use. In this part, we will learn how to use first or at first; source or resources. Word formation can help us memorize words. Prefixes—an important part in word formation will be introduced in this part.

  • 3.5Sentence Patterns

    Sentence patterns play a significant role in learning foreign languages. In this part, we will first focus on two sentence patterns: “the reason why” and “the fact that”, and then learn “not until” and “I bet”.

  • 3.6Reading Skills

    Reading skills are the building blocks to fully independent reading. In this part, we are going to learn strategies for Reading Comprehension. We start with summarization. We will concentrate on why we use it and how we use it in reading. Examples and exercises are also provided for us to learn better and learn more.

  • 3.7Writing Essential

    Letter writing is a skill people need for personal, professional and academic purposes. Letters come in many forms, from digital to hard copy and informal to formal. Knowing how to format and write effective letters when corresponding with professionals as well as acquaintances. In this part, we describe how to write a good letter and provide examples.

  • 第四章Going Offline

    We will find that the smartphones have been full of our life. We seem to use the phone all the time. It is time to go offline. In this unit, some new words and expressions, questions, sentence patterns about going offline will be learned. The students’ listening, speaking, reading, translating and writing skills will be practised.

    In this unit, we are going to learn a text titled “Living Green”: A family of city-dwellers move from the city to the remote countryside to try living the simple life. Then we are going to have 2 readings. In reading 1, members of one family take to their feet and their bikes then they decide to try living in a suburb of a major Australian city without their car. In reading 2, the author argues that China has a lesson or tow to teach America when it comes to renewable energy.

    We are going to have a clear picture of the unit from the introduction to its meaning and its structure.

  • 5.2Pre-reading

    In this part, we are going to learn a news report titled How China is creating ‘green life’, from which we can learn China’s measures to meet these challenges and the great achievements we have made during these years. A video clip about clean cities servers as an opener to arouse our attention to green life.

  • 5.3Text Reading

    In this part, we are going through some key words and expressions from the text which are useful for the text comprehension and our future use. And we will paraphrase some difficult sentences from the text. We should read between lines so that we can have a better understanding of the text.

  • 5.4Usage

    Many English-learners have difficulty in understanding and using Infinitive forms. In this part, we will learn how to use Verbs phrasal verbs followed by infinitives or -ing forms or both. And a.+infinitive.

  • 5.5Sentence Patterns

    Sentence patterns play a significant role in learning foreign languages. In this part, we will first focus on two sentence patterns: “it is (when\where\because)that ” and “it takes sb. time to do sth.”, then we will learn “yes, but” and “what better way to do /doing”.

    Reading skills are the building blocks to fully independent reading. In this part, we are going to learn two strategies for Reading Comprehension: Inference and reasoning. Examples and exercises are also provided for us to learn better and learn more.

    Expository writing is very important in academic writing. A thorough knowledge of this writing form will hold us in good stead all through our study life and career. The best way to improve writing skills is through detailed instruction and regular practice. Examples and Exercises are given to help us in learning expository writing.
