Unit 2 is about freshmen who are already adults still being controlled by their parents. It focuses on how freshmen can get independent from their parents and rise up to challenges in the first year of college. Meanwhile, it is a reminder to parents that they need to let go of their adult children and give them freedom to grow up all by themselves.

This section contains a theme-related song and a video clip. The song is about a boy who wants to be independent before he is going off to college. The video clip shows us what it is like for American freshmen to enroll on their first day into college.

This section contains a detailed analysis of the text, specifically, how the text is structured, how the writer uses contrast to prove her point, and how to locate and understand key information in the text.

This section focuses on language points, including important words, phrases and sentence patterns and some drills.

This section focuses on how to find keywords. It includes how to categorize keywords, and how to spot keywords quickly in an article as well as key information.

This section contains how to categorize emails, what the format of an email is, how different kinds of language is used in different types of emails, and how to reply to an email from your parents.

In this unit, we are going to learn a text titled “What’s the world to do about water?” In this text, the author, will give us a detailed account of water problems. Then we are going to have 2 readings: Reading 1 continues our look at the problem of water scarcity, outlining its effects on health, hunger, education and poverty. Reading 2 describes China’s water situation and concludes that China needs a sustainable, long-term solution to its water problem.

We will find that the smartphones have been full of our life. We seem to use the phone all the time. It is time to go offline. In this unit, some new words and expressions, questions, sentence patterns about going offline will be learned. The students’ listening, speaking, reading, translating and writing skills will be practised.

In this unit, we are going to learn a text titled “Living Green”: A family of city-dwellers move from the city to the remote countryside to try living the simple life. Then we are going to have 2 readings. In reading 1, members of one family take to their feet and their bikes then they decide to try living in a suburb of a major Australian city without their car. In reading 2, the author argues that China has a lesson or tow to teach America when it comes to renewable energy.
